My favourite smell in the whole world, next to freshly baked bread and Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder (preferably on a baby’s neck), is the smell of a freshly mowed lawn being watered. My most treasured childhood memory is my father sitting on the freshly cut grass on a Saturday afternoon after putting the sprinklers on. The kr kr kr kr kr krrrrrrrrrrr sound the sprinklers make still make me smile. It is pretty obvious I love gardens. Unfortunately I do not have green fingers and smother all things green with too much or too little water. Fortunately my Malawian gardener, Bosco comes to bring life in our garden. Thanks to him my fresh herbs – including my mint – have been slowly nursed back to life after being captured in purgatory. It is now my favourite corner of our garden. Suffice to say my fresh herbs have been waiting patiently for an opportunity to shine – and what better than to combine mint with the Queen of Summer: strawberry. I hope you smell the freshly cut grass when you bite into this jam. I do.
