This winter I longed to make a bitter orange marmalade, but I wasn’t able to find Seville oranges anywhere local. When I visited my friend one morning I mentioned this to her. While we were sipping on Rooibos tea, she mentioned that her nanny always brings fresh oranges from her home in Sir Lowry’s Village – in the shadows of the Hottentots-Holland Mountains. After we chatted to Rochanna, she promised to bring me a few the next day. Rochanna walks 15 km to work every day, but still manages to smile all day long, despite having to be on her feet for almost 10 hours. I made this marmalade especially for her, and infused it with Rooibos, her favourite mid-morning refreshment. The ginger gives it a fresh wintery feel. Truly South-African. Truly Rochanna.
