I love to take drives through my neighbourhood to scout for fruit trees. These drives are mostly combined with getting my two year old to sleep, so the drives can get very long! During winter the Northern suburbs’ Lemon Trees come to life. Just about every second property in our suburb has a lemon tree. I struggled not to hum the Fools Garden ’95 hit “Lemon Tree”
“I wonder how / I wonder why /Yesterday you told me ’bout the blue blue sky /and all that I can see is just a yellow lemon-tree“- clearly I failed miserably!
There is something truly majestic and magical to a lemon tree in all its glory – especially to a lemon tree sitting peacefully in the middle of a bustling suburb, with the beautiful fruit almost crying out to you. Great was my surprise when I came about a lemon tree, full of life and fruit, fenced in on municipal property. How bitter-sweet. It took all of my willpower not to climb over the fence and help myself to a bag of lemons in an effort to prevent these lemons being wasted like this! Yes, I am lucky to have been blessed by numerous glorious lemons from neighbours (albeit not from this fenced-in tree) – unfortunately I will not be making lemonade.. These lemons’ journey will end in a jar.
